Dans la nuit du 20 au 21 août 1968, les armées du Pacte de Varsovie, sans la Roumanie et l'Albanie, envahissent la Tchécoslovaquie après le débarquement d'unités parachutistes et terrestres, le 18 août, à Prague Ruzyně.

Le 22 août 1968, les Beatles enregistrent une chanson de Lennon / McCartney - selon l'éditeur, Back In The USSR aux studios d'Abbey Road. Le temps est à l'orage. Ringo ne se sentant pas une gueule d'atmosphère quitte le groupe pour la Sardaigne. Back in the USSR se fait sans lui. Paul tient la batterie (avec John et George), le chant et le piano, John, la guitare (et la basse), George, la basse. La force des trois se retrouve dans les chœurs et les claquements de mains auxquels s'ajoutent le bruit de l'avion, en clin d'œil anticipé aux hélicoptères de Karlheinz Stockhausen, déjà membre du Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Les mousquetaires de Liverpool n'ont jamais été franchement marxistes-léninistes. Dans le Nouveau Monde alors en guerre contre le Việt Cộng, on a pu entendre un hommage mal venu à l'URSS, soutien du Front National pour la Libération du Sud Viêt Nam.

La question du THE

Dans l'interprétation récente de Paul (Kiev, 2008), le THE de Back in the USSR est presque toujours shinté. C'est qu'il n'est pas naturel. On dit : Made in USA. Or else, Christmas time coming up : in Turkey, they don't touch the fat – c'est affaire de religion ; they don't touch the fat in the turkey – c'est affaire de goût.
